Almost all of my journeys are 5.5 miles or less from a cold start (work is a 5.5 mile drive) so my mileage is pretty good considering.

I normally drive with the mindset that the wider you open the throttle the more efficient the engine since petrol/gas engines work by resistricting the airflow to the cylinders which reduces the theoretical compression ratio (the amount of air in the cylinder and the pressure it's compressed to) which reduces engine efficiency. I normally try plan so I can do 1 quick acceleration at around 2000-3000rpm (the car has VVT-i so it has really good torque curve, 80% of the torque is avaibable at 1500rpm) then coast to the next junction and when I do drive on a straight road I try keep the revs at or below 1500rpm with the minimal amount of throttle. If I get stopped by the lights or I know I'm going to have to stop for a while I switch my engine off (The trip MPG drops like a stone if you leave it running! a 10 second stop while idling can drop the mileage by 3 mpg, like from 60 to 57 mpg).

Something I do must work, I also use an OBDII bluetooth adapter and Torque which is very helpful to see what mileage you're actually doing and being able see the instant mpg (the car doesn't have a display for instant or average mpg) is extremely helpful

*I use Imperial Gallons for MPG
