Online Sync was introduced early in 2009 as a safety net for data loss; errors in iTunes' sync or backup/restore features, necessary "restore as new" resets of the iPhone, and accidental app deletion are the most common causes. In case of data loss, it's generally best to try restoring through iTunes first; if unsuccessful, the following are the proper steps to recover data through Online Sync, the first of which is optional but recommended. Note: if a unit setting other than MPG (US) has been used, ensure the proper setting is selected before attempting to recover data.
1. Hard reset the iPhone to ensure the OS flushes the cache and starts fresh. To do so, press-hold the physical Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until the device shuts off and begins to restart, indicated by the appearance of the silver Apple.
2. Ensure the email address field in the Setup/Login screen is populated with the correct email address. The status message below the email address field should indicate the account is already set up. If the email address field is blank, enter the proper address then tap Send; an alert should then fire to indicate the account for that email address is already set up.
3. Return to the main screen and tap Sync.
All data since the last time Sync was tapped should restore. If unsuccessful, it's possible an alternate, valid email address was entered; retry all three steps using another address. In some cases, it may be necessary to completely delete and reinstall Gas Cubby as a step 0.
