Need Help plz! HF tranny codes
2 Attachment(s)
I recently bought a "HF" tranny from Montana. I did the internet gear check and it came up as a DX.
I'm trying to figure out the L3...... codes If you have a HF tranny can you PLEASE post your L3 code on the gold sticker. Or if there is any other way of identifying the HF tranny. I need something concrete to show the wrecking yard that its not an HF tranny. Thanks ! |
From what I'd read on some other forums back when I was researching them, the code on the gold sticker was some sort of serial number and didn't reflect the gear ratios. I don't know that for a fact however. In any case, my 1988 hf 49 state transmission has a code of L3-1121866. Good luck.

Unfortunately Honda never released any info that I could find that made IDing the cable trans easy :( Edit: Ah i never clicked on the link you posted to see you found that picture already... |
Quickest and most sure-fire way I've found with the tranny off the car is to just pull the one case side off and count the gears yourself........sounds hard but its only 12-12mm bolts, a tranny plug that fits a 3/8ths ratchet and 2 skinny screwdrivers and its off! Takes less than 5 min to get it off, there are links with pics but at the moment I don't have them

what's funny is that this method shown in the diagram (and I'll admit that it is valid for the 3 transmissions shown) does NOT account for the two different HF transmissions. People, are we forgetting that there were two different HF transmissions.....that is, 2 different gearings for the HF! There was the Federal models (which is the tallest geared CRX), and then there was the CA model (whose gearing was significantly shorter). Perhaps this fellow/guy bought himself a CA model HF transmission. Everyone always posts (HF trans wanted; although the differences are unbeknownst to them).
