Sir Stirling Moss
 

It was announced today that Sir Stirling Moss has died, after a long illness. He was 90.
He was my boyhood hero, the best racing driver never to win a world championship.
It is a sad day for motor racing.
I remember reading Denis Jenkinson's book about his 1955 Mille Miglia win. A brilliant read. The Mercedes 300SLR, number 722, is reckoned to the most valuable car in existence.

Sad news indeed.

I remember following Sterling when I became interested in cars beginning in the 1950s.

It seems they drove with a straight-arm technique which still seems so cool to me. In contrast, watching NASCAR drivers with their elbows-in-the-lap seems so odd.

RIP Sterling. You made an indelible mark on racing history.

The 50's through the 80's, the gold era of racing with some of the best looking cars and the most impressive drivers, Sir Sterling Moss being one of the amazing ones.

When you see the tracks and the lack of safety measure it is no wonder so many died. A straw bale in front of a lamp post or mooring bollard (Monaco) will not stop a Grand Prix car.
Stirling was a sucker for British cars and their lack of reliability cost him dearly.

Sounds like he was probably retired before I was even born, but I have heard he was a legend and a hero in his prime, as someone who enjoys fast cars and the thrill of driving quickly myself, we probably would have got along very well. Rest in peace Sir Stirling Moss.

He retired after a massive crash in 1962 The crash at Goodwood put him in a coma for a month.

His sister, Pat (married to Erik Carlson) was a rally driver. At the Monte Carlo Rally, she came in 5th in 1964 and 3rd in 1965.

Fast driving was obviously a family trait.
