Thomas, you may want to delay buying any new cars for 3 years, which is the furthest out all these companies claim Level 5 self-driving (totally hands off) will be ready for public use.

Take that claim with a huge grain of salt. Self driving has to be fully integrated with every manufacturer's vehicles capable of flawless INTERACTIVE performance, as well as fully secured from any outside nefarious influences, causing catastrophic accidents with nightmarish liability situations that could take years to litigate.

I don't doubt it can be done in 3 years by individual manufacturers if the value incentive is there, but to go to a complete system would require the "Smart" vehicles to successfully interact with STUPID drivers in their obsolete DUMB cars.

You will not see the old cars disappear for at least a decade, so the initial implementation will be exponentially more difficult that it would be if universal implementation was instituted.

And for that decade autonomous cars will be relentlessly bullied by us drivers in conventional cars. If we know that the autonomous vehicle will slow, stop, and steer to avoid us we will just push on regardless. I already do that when I come upon a brand new vehicle in heavy traffic. No driver wants a bump in his new car and there are no guns in the UK!

Gary, this IS America. They couldn't put it out there for the public if it wasn't true. Just like CNN. And, stand up and salute, whenever you hear those three letters, soldier. At ease.

Most of my last few years driving is learning to anticipate stupidity. I find it to be almost overwhelming, most driven by total ignorance of physics, economics, and obliviousity following the definition of stupid.

Depends what your definition of stupid is though. Some may argue that driving almost half the speed limit with traffic following, forcing other members of the public to use evasive manoeuvres, driving with your engine off and having no servo assisted brakes or steering (the two most important things on a car) and not having the ability to accelerate out of a situation instantly stupid too. Depends on your outlook.

If you are referring to me and how I drive then stupid defines that reference.

I'm just pleased I live in a country where you're not labeled stupid, or racist or shot to death for having opinions that differ from others. We have more respect.
