Very Low MPG- toyota camry 2005 2.4l
 

Any idea why my toyota camry 2005 2.4l engine consumes so much fuel. is it the type of fuel we use here or something else. i have checked the car and nothing is wrong with it, i do regular service and my best miles per gallon is 15MPG but usually its about 12MPG

Can you describe your journeys please, this can have a big effect on fuel economy for example:

BAD
Short Journeys, say less than 5-6 miles - very bad for MPG
Cold Weather - bad for MPG
Lots of Stop/Start in traffic - very bad for MPG
High speed - bad for MPG
Braking - heavy braking is bad for MPG, you have either wasted fuel before the braking by not anticipating what was ahead, or you will waste it after the braking getting back up to speed.

GOOD
Accelerating slowly.
Longer journeys - 25+ miles, especially if you can keep up a steady 50-60 mph
Anticipation, don't follow the car in front too close, if the lights are red don't race towards them
Tyre pressures - make sure they are at the recommended pressures.

Agree with all of the above.
Maybe you have a fuel pipe or tank leak - one car I had did, explained the poor mpg...!
Maybe it needs a service, or has had a bad chip update.
A car I had failed, quite likely due to a bad aftermarket power box added within the engine bay. It was then unplugged, but too late....
Could your head gasket be going, losing fuel into the radiator or just leaking?
That is terrible economy, even for a big petrol car.

Is it possible someone is stealing fuel from your tank?

Someone once told me they used to do that to a colleague who worked out fuel economy years ago - would take some out of one tank and add it to another to mess up their spreadsheet. A55hole!

Also... I remember looking at cars recently, when I bought mine. Even as new as 2011. Camry's weren't getting near the mileage they are now. There was a big jump about 2014. I think it was mostly the addition of the new transmission.
Combine that with gasoline is a place like Nigeria? Quality? Ethanol? Water? City driving? ....

Toyota does really get their money's worth out of the manufacturing line for their transmissions. Scions are still just 4 speeds.

Surely be more efficient with some of the 8/9 speeds from thier sister company Lexus models?

They would be more efficient, but it took Toyota until the 2015 model of the Corolla to put in an efficient CVT. And the old 4 speed automatic is still on the base trim.

I have the CVT in my 2014 Corolla.
There could be other reasons. The 2014's have higher average mileage than any other year.
