Ford Fusion

PS - judging from the photos at ABG, the exterior sheetmetal is stock. Nothing else is.
PPS - It's a hydrogen fuel cell powerplant. |

Aerodynamic and righteous looking to boot. CarloSW2 |
Since they're going to those lengths now it just needs wheel skirts, shaved handles, VGs and hoodpin removal!
|
Improved high speed performance is a fringe benefit of doing the aero mods. My car now cruises easily at 80mph, whereas in stock condition you could hear the ICE struggling a bit to maintain that speed.
|
thats preety sweet.
|
We need to keep our eyes on B'ville. Top speed racing (SE, speed efficiency?) in restricted classes is sort of the flip side of FE.

Good find!

Hey nerds, how did you find the slide photo? It's not in the autobloggreen gallery.
|
Slide show ( duh ! )
I was thinking .... slide ....? Hmmmm. www.inflatablefun.biz/.../upload/slide_chris.jpg |

Did you guys also notice the diffuser like thingees under the car ?

Ah, "see all galleries". Thanks.
Yeah, those appear similar to what we were calling "fences" at the back of the gen2 Prius: https://images.motortrend.com/oftheye..._left_side.jpg Want to speculate about the Prius' rear "fences"? |
Yes i remember that post. I read it with great interest. And ( believe it or don't - the Prius 'fences' were the first things i thought of. )

Hey, I must come off as a complete smart *** when I make comments about the lack of wheel covers or wheel design being an issue, but that isn't really the case.
I just notice that even in NASCAR, where they stretch out car bodies to the point of then being unrecognizable, they still don't do ANYTHING to the wheel wells. In fact, it is just the opposite. The wheels are way far inward instead of flush with the bodywork. To me it seems like there would be a huge drag buildup there. They brought a NASCAR car to work the other day. I was shocked at how horribly 'dirty' that the underside is on these cars. I realize that the air dam diverts a lot of air from under the car, but there are some tracks where that the ground clearance is greater ( around 3" or so ) and a lot of air gets under there. The worst part was just behind the back bumper ( which they chop off for some reason ) There is a huge amount of drag there . I wish I had my camera that day. It was a complete joke ! I would think as much as teams cheat, this would be THE |
The thing about NASCAR race cars is there governed by a set of rules that prevents many aero improvements. NASCAR does things to slow the cars down since they don't really like to see them ever go much over 200mph due to spectator safety reasons. Over 200mph the cars tend to get air born in crashes even with all the roof flaps, hood flaps, and side skirts, they just don't want a car flying over the fence into the crowds.
I've seen races won by the rear bumper falling off making there car much faster. I think some of the crews even rig them to fall off easy for that reason. :) Ever seen the "car of tomorrow"? Its one draggy looking brick that's shape is so far not allowed to be adjusted. Its even slower than the old car. |
Ugh. Ricer of tommorow...
Another shot of the diffuser/fences. https://www.autobloggreen.com/gallery...on-999/306098/ |

What about in cases where there are no rules for such things as body mods. I posted earlier about the Hot Rod bonneville camaro. I has HUGE open wheel-wells, yet no attempt was made to even create a small 'lip' to divert air around that area. ( And the wheels were not flush either ) I would think that if they wanted an open wheel look to the car, they would have at least tried to manage the airflow that gets trapped in the wheelwells and have it exit out the sides of the fenders ( Like the Viper or Corvette ) I'm puzzled by it all. |
Nerds laugh at me -

It seems like the roof fins and under-diffusers would be easy to do. EDIT : OK, I just noticed that the roof diffusers are typical Nascar. CarloSW2 |
What is the purpose of those extentions on the roof anyways ?
I always thought they served the same purpose as a vertical stabalizer on an aircraft. |
The fences on the roof of NASCAR cars is to reduce lift if they drift so the air is coming from the side. It "spoils" the lift. Those, coupled with roof flaps, make flying NASCARs the exception rather than the rule.
|
A few more photos, though they'll vanish come Wednesday morning.:(
|
just a thought on the side but could these side spoilers be the reason why so many cars and suv's are outfitted with roofrails? most of these look heavy enought not to fly off even at high speeds but their high buildup should generate enough lift to cause instability, so perhaps these silly roofracks pervent lift from sidewinds and make the car more stable at highway speeds?
|
i'm not sure if it's already posted before, but this picture gives a good view at the dropshape of the car.
there also seem to be some interesting ridges over the front and rear window... any ideas what they are? air guides?... |
That is a good picture.
The strips look to me like they're just there to hold the glass or make sure it stays in place: https://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/...esting/313326/ https://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/...esting/313338/ |
So is the rear deck extension for areo ? or just a place to put the parachutes?
I looked at the prius "rear fences" on a car in the parking lot. Then I made my self some and mounted them on my prizm, they look kinda cool, But I don't really know if there helping FE or not. |
Got a pic of your fences, ELF?
I'd say the deck lid extension helps aero. It improves the effective angle from the trailing edge of the roof to the trailing edge of the deck. Also as lunarhighway pointed out the side plates continue the boattailing of the sides. |

anybody else intrigued about the stock .34 cd rating?
The car appears to be designed with aero in mind. Ford's new grille design is nearly a complete grille block, with only the lower portion left open (on both the main and lower grille). Side mirrors are relatively small. Wipers are placed very low on the windscreen. Rear glass has a long slope that leads to a fairly high deck lid. One would have to guess the underbody is very dirty, and I dont see any air dams or wheel spoilers. Why? https://www.velocityjournal.com/image...on1767754m.jpg |
Maybe it's easier to make a car that looks smooth, than to make one with a low Cd. 0.34 does seem high.
|
It is high.
|
If you look through the ABG Fusion 999 gallery,
|
Well they do claim a .08 reduction in drag coefficient just from lowering. Clearly there is allot of room for improvement underneath the car - even if all you do is reduce the frontal area of the tires.
