FE Team Challenge -- New Teams

Ok GasMasters -- it's time to form new teams for the FE Team Challenge. Review the latest rules (which are a work in progress as new/unanticipated situations are presented).

There's a 2-week grace period from today (Midnight, EST) to form and announce a team. Just make the announcement here...

Anyone else up for the Challenge?

Does this mean the competition is on hold for the next 2 weeks?

No -- everything is still normal for existing teams. Since we didn't have any new teams sign up, it was discussed to allow teams to enter within the next 2 weeks, but use the 90-day average from the cycle start and to extract gaslog data retroactively (so no advantages). It would allow any late entries a chance to participate.

So far, no else has expressed an interest.

I'm expressing interest. I just private-messaged 4 members here to ask if they want to join a team with me.

Peaksters GEO squad:D . You and your team need to voice your opinion on the min fill poll then.

SVOboy were you not putting together team honda?

landspeed 04-09-2007 07:28 AM

I'm glad it is still going on for existing teams... Because I am working on a pretty good tank just now :). It *may* even be a personal record for me!

OdieTurbo 04-09-2007 09:26 AM

Hey there! I'd love to be on a team! Who's in? :D

GasSavers_James 04-09-2007 02:01 PM

new team

I would like to start a team also...I was thinking of a team from the northeast. Let me know if you want to join.

rh77 04-09-2007 02:37 PM

Keep goin!

Keep going guys! The more teams the better!

Peakster 04-09-2007 02:49 PM

My team is almost complete. Right now it's:

Kickflipjr - Protege
Red - TJ
JanGeo - XB
and of course me, Peakster - Metro
Still waiting on one more... ooooh the suspense!

SVOboy 04-09-2007 03:09 PM

I should get on team honda...I had confusion with the rules. Busy today, so everyone who I pm'd, if you want, respond or pm me back, or I'll hit you up tomorrow.

It looks like you've met all of the requirements by having a 4-door and automatic. I'll add you to the spreadsheet. I assume Peakster, you'll be the Team Captain -- so I generally like updates from one person from week to week for a total. SG estimates are fine until the end of the cycle. Good luck finding a name and with the competition!

MetroMPG 04-10-2007 12:42 PM

Awesome. Good luck Peakster and all new members.

Team #4: have any ideas for a team name?

rh77: what is the official day of the week where FE updates are due? Do we post them in the F.E.T.C. discussion forum?

Sunday is the last day for updates. Most have been posting to the stats and current standing page. The TC (Team captains) should be sending team info directly to you. Although it fun to see how every one is doing week to week.

Peakster now's the hard part, coming up with a name. Great job with the team selection.

red91sit 04-10-2007 04:41 PM

I like the name

"The Angry Potatoes"

Quite a variety you got there. Way to go, guys. Took you a lot less time to round up a team than it did for me. You will enjoy it. We be watching you.

Hmmmm... lets see... A Lincoln at one end and a Geo on the other....
Somehow the phrase 'Feast and Famine' comes to mind. :)
Good luck on the Team Challenge!

I also thought of the "Attack of the Boxes" (but Kick and I don't have boxy vehicles), "The 25 Cylinder Convoy", and "The 40mph Club".

OPEC Busters, Slow Burn, and GasMisers5: how did you guys decide your team names?
Kick, Red, and JanGeo: Give some name ideas too!

GasSavers_Red 04-10-2007 09:25 PM

I like "Feast and Famine" covers the variety of vehicles pretty well. Too tired to think of anything good, but "Pump Busters" came to mind...

Or Rolling Legos, though Kick and Peakster have curves on their rides.

kickflipjr 04-10-2007 09:51 PM

Hopefully I will hit 50 during this *fingers crossed*

I just brainstormed several names that had something to do with saving gas and sent them in a PM to the other 4 members. You can send the same PM to many members all at once. Some of the names were kinda weird, but I sent them out anyway because sometimes an odd name will jog someones memory and they'll come up with a catchy variation.

There was an old fishing show on TV called "BassMasters" -- how about "GasMasters"?

I've used it before for a bowling team -- the "BowlMasters". Doesn't quite have the ring...hmmm.

Peakster 04-11-2007 06:30 AM

I'm actually liking DRW's "Feast & Famine". What do other teammates think?

red91sit 04-11-2007 04:51 PM

It sounds pretty good to me!

GasSavers_Red 04-11-2007 05:01 PM

"Feast & Famine" sounds good

Peakster 04-11-2007 07:36 PM

Okay, "Feast & Famine" it is!

DRW 04-12-2007 08:33 PM

Ah darn. I was hoping you would choose 'GasMasters' so I could make juvenile fart jokes about your team! lol

I would've gotten away with it, if it wasn't for you snooping kids...:p

I thought GasMasters sounded kinda silly from the get-go. Made me think of septic tank workers with tacky outfits :D. Who-you-gonna-call? GAS-MASTERS! *insert music here*

GasSavers_James 04-13-2007 02:16 PM

I may be getting a VX on monday or tuesday. If that happens, I would like to be on a "honda" team. I am guessing that it will probably only get 45MPG at first, and the lean burn won't work. But it does have only 112K...I am stoked.

MetroMPG 04-14-2007 04:34 PM

James, if the Honda team is full up, we'll gladly have you with us. Have you heard anything yet from the Honda folks?

Team Slow Burn lost a star player (DRW) at the end of the first session.

GasSavers_James 04-14-2007 05:28 PM

MetroMPG-
Sounds good, I will join slow burn. The Honda team hasn't materialized...
I am going down to get the VX (if everything checks out) on wednesday, since there is going to be another big snowstorm on monday. I am a little bit sad to give up the EOC and pulse and glide in the Camry...I guess the technique on the VX is to keep it steady to maintain Leanburn and warm O2 sensor temps.

How frequently do you have to fill up for the competition? I usually do longer trips and then try not to drive for 10 days or more sometimes.
-James

MetroMPG 04-14-2007 06:57 PM

Cool!

I suppose I should have asked what kind of driving you typically do. You want to be a highway or rural driver to wring the best out of a VX, not an urban driver.

One of the first mods I'd be looking at is the lean burn indicator - there are instructions for setting that up somewhere on this site.

Anyway. Only one fill up is actually required in each contest session, and it must be more than 3 gallons.

DRW 04-14-2007 10:46 PM

Good luck, James! I'll be rooting for you! Even though I'm sidelined for now, team Slow Burn is still my favorite!

GasSavers_James 04-15-2007 04:57 AM

Sounds good, I think I will use about three gallons getting it home, since it is in southern NH and i am in northern VT. I do mostly rural driving: speed limit 50. There are some pretty serious hills that once you get to know you can really take advantage of. there are virtually no stop lights and when i get on the interstate I dont go faster than 60...though sometimes as slow as 55. Northern VT is excellent for pulse and glide and long downhill coasts, especially in the summertime. I guess with the VX the best way to do it is the Engine on coast to keep the O2 sensor hot.
Yes I have to get a digital multimeter and hook up the lean burn indicator. It seems fairly simple to do. I think also keeping the VX running warm is important. I will try a partial grill block and watch the temp guage closely. Also will try to combine 10 trips into 1 to maximize the warmed up engine time. Right now I live 3 miles down a dirt road, and it is mud season, so i guess i am probably seeing about 10MPG on that section.
So the aim of the competition is the biggest improvement? Is that over previous tanks or over EPA?
