I was looking in autotraders and there's lots of Civic "CX" and "DX" but couldn't find a VX. What do all these letters mean anyways?
|
The letters are just trim level.

Quote:
DX - normal no frills car. 92 HP, 16 valve. VX - 12/16 valve vtec-e, depending on RPM. 62/92 Horsepower, depending on RPM. SI/EX - 16 valve vtec, 120ish horsepower. |

Edit: Just looked up the EPA figures of a '95 Civic HB VX. Holy smokes! It blows my Metro away! |
Where did you get the vtec-e numbers for the vx?
|
so ant civic is good?

the Horse power rating is peek horse power... so I don't get how it can have two numbers, the VX engine puts out more torqe at lower engine speeds then the engine in the CX, that is part of how it can get better mileage, and because of the Variable valve timing, it can "breath" better at higher rpm's and put out more peek power.
other then engine types, the CX, and VX are pretty close to the same body, the VX has a few extras like light snazzy alloy wheels, lower front lip/air dam, and it seems like a few other non engine related items, but I forget what they are, the CX or VX came as basicly a striped down car, if you wanted a rear wiper, passenger side mirrer, a/c, mud flaps, side trim/door bumper, you had to order it as a factory/dealer option (mine has most of this stuff, most vx's I've seen don't have them). I don't think you could get either cx or vx with things like cruse controle, power windows/locks, or ABS as an option, altho the DX and SI did have all that stuff as an option I'm still not sure about ABS. Basicly the higher up in the trim leavle (cx, vx, dx, si) the more options you had, and the more the car cost, altho I think the vx cost more then the dx, because of the engine. |

prices on them seem to have gone up a bit, I paid $1,900 for mine, a 1992 that had 204,000 miles on it at the time, a crunched front bumper cover, bad o2 sensor, and the start of the main tranny bearing going out, I've sence fixed all of it, and it works/looks great. but it's not just that they are good on gas, it's a pretty well made car, the controles all feel reasonably solid, and well placed, the engine bay is easy to navigate, brakes are extreamly easy to check/replace, it's almost like they went thru the list of matence items, and made sure that you could do everything that needed to be done over the life of the car, unlike some amarican made cars where you have to unbolt the engine, and rotate it a few degrees to change spark plugs. |
They are not easy to find. Here are a few I found:

Hondas have the best resale value of any make!

They do come up, from time to time, but you have to be pretty tenacious and patient. Their was one acquired in Phoenix, about a month ago. I believe the new owner paid about $3500, but it sounded like the car was also in top condition.

i have 2-3 k to spend i just hope they have ABS
|
They don't have abs, as abs is for suckers.

Oh you.

I have been looking for a VX for a while. All the ones I come across have been completely trashed. I just keep looking and figure I will come across a decent one sooner or later.

I was looking for one too, until I found Dan's :)

Sometimes you have to take what you can get to get a VX. Here are a few pics of mine the day I got it home:

That was done by a person I worked with at his shop for $400 (just the replacement and a coat of high fill primer). I painted the car myself (for less than $30 with spray paint) after replacing the passenger door and fender along with the rear tailgate. Also changed timing belt, water pump, spark plugs and wires (had the wrong plugs in there) side mirrors, decarbonized the engine internally, and a few other mods as can be seen in my garage. Price for the car was $1500 just over a year ago. Since owning it I've put just under $500 into the body and some maintenance. It's been worth it since I've saved more than that in gas since owning it. |
There's nothing wrong with a CX. That's what I drive, and it gave me low 50's MPG on the highway with its stock engine. Give it the aero treatment and you'll have a good high-MPG interstate cruiser for long commutes. They are certainly a lot easier to find than the VX.

the CX
It seems like the CX is worth considering. It is nearly as efficient as the VX, and there are a lot more of them around. Everyone is after a VX, but the CX is less desirable and cheaper. I would buy one now if I had the money. I have found 4 in my area in the last four months.

Hummm... Mine didn't quite like that but close. I really like your Penn State blue paint job. I picked mine up with a savage certificate and had to apply for the title. It was a giant pain in the *** but worth it. They are out there you just have to look around. |
ABS is for people who never learned to drive, Learn to drive and you will be fine.
It just snowed here monday, first real snow of the winter, so I found an empty parking lot, and re-learned how my car handles in snow, sure if I tried I could lock up the wheels and skid, but you could feel it, and you had controle over what was going on, reviews I've read have even showen, ABS increses stopping distance, apparently it's most affective over 70mph, so if you plan on slaming on your brakes as that speed alot, and don't know how to drive, then maybe you should stay off the road. |
