Another conversion diary. Just started the project.

Cool. It seems like alot of people are doing this these days. Hell, if I had the technical know-how and money, I might pick up an older light vehicle like a CRX or a Tercel to convert.

Are there really only two posts there?

Not a whole lot of info on that site.
Apparently this guy has money. Interesting concept. buy a new car... Strip it of everything..... Put the parts on ebay to make money for the car payment. |
Hello -
Here's a shop doing it in LA : https://www.leftcoastconversions.com/index.php https://www.laweekly.com/general/feat...ric-car/13975/ Bring your car (a vintage CRX maybe, woo hoo!?!?!?!) and he can do it, or you can buy a kit for about $17,000 with batteries. The LA Weekly article is better than the website, CarloSW2 |

I think they're cool transportation technology, and I can hardly wait to drive the ForkenSwift. But I also know they don't make sense for everyone (with current battery limitations & price issues). |
Here's another conversion of a brand new Echo/Yaris:
This Australian bought his Yaris (a.k.a. Echo in North America & Aus.) new in '04 and documented his conversion. He even uses renewable electricity, so it's that much more green: https://www.electric-echo.com/ https://www.electric-echo.com/images/...dEcho3Door.jpg |
Yeah I've seen that one a while back (when it was in prog.). It's nicely done. I'd like to echo his work ;) on a Yaris or xA.

Here he's going to drop all of this cash on a new car and use a 192V AGM lead acid pack? 16 Exide Orbitals would get him about 25 miles range to 100% discharge in that car.
Whatever floats his boat, but that money spent on a new car would be better spent on a set of NiCds... A CRX with about 1,000 pounds of NiCds would have little trouble doing 120+ miles range at 60 mph. Although, I can understand AGMs from a performance perspective. He is planning on a 300V Zilla controller, after all. I'd estimate with 3,000 lbs curb weight, 192V of Exide Orbitals, a Zilla 1k controller, and WarP 9" motor, this car will do 0-60 mph in the low to mid 7 seconds area and 1/4 mile in the mid to upper 15s. This doesn't factor in whether the car is front or rear wheel drive. I don't know much about the Yaris. If it's FWD, it may be doing 16s-17s in the 1/4 mile drag race, instead of 15s. Traction is a ***** for FWD EVs. Here's his austinev.org entry: https://www.austinev.org/evalbum/922 |
Another echo/yaris sibling about to go electric:
https://www.austinev.org/evalbum/imgm...pg&w=300&h=200 Documenting the conversion of a Scion Xa gas (ICE) to electric (BEV). https://www.evconvert.blogspot.com/ (Just started - not much there yet.) |

Anyway, interesting development. I look forward to the day when electric cars are available in every dealership, and conversion kits are a bit more within reach of the average consumer. M |
Well, since the thread was revived, I'll drop my 2 cents worth... You want a light car to convert to electric? My choice would be a Dodge Aries K. Very lightweight, quite roomy for its weight, they're extremely cheap to purchase, seats 6, and has a good size engine bay and trunk to stuff with batteries. Plus you can put some Aries wagon springs in the back to counteract the weight of the batteries.

I'd prefer an old RWD Corolla, Supra, RX7, or Miata.
I only mention rear wheel drive because if you opt out of the transmission it is much easier to do. Plus, you also have more options as almost anything can be used for a gearbox since it has only one output shaft instead of needing the fwd transaxle. |
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plymouth_Reliant cites the Reliant (badge-engineered Aries IIRC) at 2300 lbs.
Not sure if this is the right model, but it looks right. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_AE86 says RWD corolla weighs around 2000 lbs. |
I was thinking the generation before that but the AE86 works too.
|
all i got is a spam site:(
|
But for 300 pounds more the Aries K is a lot roomier than the Corolla, and has a much larger trunk to store batteries in. You're comparing a midsize Dodge Aries to a compact Corolla. Taking into account the larger car, for 300 pounds more. The Aries had a nice size trunk. Pleanty of room for batteries, and still have room for a few bags of groceries.
|
For just 1500 more pounds you could have a stupid amount of batteries!

Great page for reading up on the K platform, with comparisons to other vehicles of its era,

A Vista Cruiser??? If I had a Vista Cruiser I wouldn't be doing that to it... I'd make a sleeper street rod out of it. Throw fuel injection on that 455...
