Back to back bests coming right up!
My last "tank" I filled up for a drive to Cleveland (250 miles one way for me), did a TON of drafting, no cruise control, no A/C and only cracked the windows, tires at 50 psi, one passanger, trunk loaded w/ extra weight (luggage, tools, fluids). Average MPH was 57, IAT showing 138*F all the way there w/ HAI. I achieved what I previously thought to be impossible w/o more mods and flatter roads... 40+ in the form of 43.66 MPG!! My previous best highway mileage was 33mpg about 2 years ago w/o trying to hypermile and not knowing a thing about it. I was expecting good mileage so I revised my HAI for the trip home to see if I could better it. I added a heat shield around the exhaust manifold made of very thin metal flashing and then trucked the flex tubing through a hole, it's now sealed a lot better than before. I was wanting 150*F+ on the highway, and after warm up and 20 miles travel, it nailed 154*F and stayed there, only dropping a few degrees w/ ambient; upon arrival home, it was showing 146*F and in the city I hit 178*F which is said to be optimal. So there it is... 43.66 mpg (out of 5.6 gallons, not an entire tank - although I was carrying a full tank of gas, so that weight played a factor I'm sure) My next post here should be in a few days, reporting what looks like 45mpg on the scangauge from the trip home. (showing 46.5 currently, but will add some city mileage to end up around 45 probably). I literally SMASHED my goal of 37 mpg highway. After I filled up and calculated the 43.66mpg, I sat in the car w/ my jaw dropped, re-doing the math and trying to figure out how??!! I re-calibrated the SG and headed home. Thanks to all of you!! |
My best of the year this past week....27.4mpg on a 75mi trip.

curious new record for bugsy(44.87). gotta figure out if it was the 89 octane or the extra city miles.
always thought they were hurting me, maybe they're not! |
RoadWarrior, I'm catching up to you. Found gas at 4.119 today and filled up about a third of the way into the tank.
207.8 miles / 8.642 gallons = 24.04 mpg 50.25% above EPA mixed rating! I'm gonna bump my tires up to 40 psi this tank and see how it effects mileage and handling. |
594 miles on 12.3 gallons. It holds 13.7 gallons. I filled up at a "Thrifty" gas station. It started to sputter, don't know if it was bad gasoline or if it was the crud at the bottom of the fuel tank. Filled up at a shell station this time. I want to run it dry then add a gallon and run it dry again to see what i would get. I am trying to get over 600miles on a fill up.

Results, 626 miles on Shell regular. Ran it dry. Put in one gallon and got 56.1 miles before it ran out. Filled up until top of gas filler and it only took 12.5 gallons. Filled up slowly with car on a down grade. Next time i fill up i will take a 5 gallon gas container and fill up with that manually and see if i can get any more into it.

I did 729 miles for my latest tank. It was sputtering near empty, started from a topped-off fill. It's a distance record, and 2nd best for mpg.

Good job PaleMelanesian. My manual says i have a 13.7 gallon tank but idk if mine can take that. The most i have put into it is the 12.5 gallons when it was dry. I did the one gallon test just to see how far i can get on a measured gallon. I need to know the max capacity so i will know if my mileage calc's are accurate. After this i will just put in 5 gallons and run it dry then 5 gallons again. I plan to do all the aero mods at once when they are ready so i can see how much difference they make.

Got my best FE on anything, ever. 57,8mpg on my Harley, it was a 101 mile tank from Meridian, MS to Tuscaloosa, AL doing around 72mph.
