Hey, I must come off as a complete smart *** when I make comments about the lack of wheel covers or wheel design being an issue, but that isn't really the case.
I just notice that even in NASCAR, where they stretch out car bodies to the point of then being unrecognizable, they still don't do ANYTHING to the wheel wells. In fact, it is just the opposite. The wheels are way far inward instead of flush with the bodywork. To me it seems like there would be a huge drag buildup there. They brought a NASCAR car to work the other day. I was shocked at how horribly 'dirty' that the underside is on these cars. I realize that the air dam diverts a lot of air from under the car, but there are some tracks where that the ground clearance is greater ( around 3" or so ) and a lot of air gets under there. The worst part was just behind the back bumper ( which they chop off for some reason ) There is a huge amount of drag there . I wish I had my camera that day. It was a complete joke ! The thing about NASCAR race cars is there governed by a set of rules that prevents many aero improvements. NASCAR does things to slow the cars down since they don't really like to see them ever go much over 200mph due to spectator safety reasons. Over 200mph the cars tend to get air born in crashes even with all the roof flaps, hood flaps, and side skirts, they just don't want a car flying over the fence into the crowds.
I've seen races won by the rear bumper falling off making there car much faster. I think some of the crews even rig them to fall off easy for that reason. :) Ever seen the "car of tomorrow"? Its one draggy looking brick that's shape is so far not allowed to be adjusted. Its even slower than the old car. |
