I will be conducting an accurate test to either prove or disprove wether a HAI will help on milage.
Parameters:
Car:
2003 Saturn LW200 automatic on Khumo ecsta ASX LRR tires (51psi) factory intake with OEM filter. HAI mod for HAI route and a 3" cold air feed for CAI route
Test loop:
65 mile loop including stop and go as well as hills and flats. 32 miles out 32 miles back
Fuel:
Shell premium 92 oct RON+MON/1
test equipment:
scangague II and a calculator (for end of run fillup calculation)
I will add the road conditions time of day and ambient temperature.
here are the results first the hot intake

miles traveled 65.2
fuel used 1.53
MPG 42.61
Cold intake
AIT 71f
miles traveled 65.6
fuel used 2.018
MPG 32.507
tank was filled to 3 clicks (fill till pump clicks off then manual for 2 more)
both trips were on the same road
Ambient temp was 68f
dry road
time 12-3pm
difference of 10.1mpg
Looks like Hot air works better for MPG than cold
I presume the outdoor temp was the same as the inlet temp in the second test (71f)? It'd be interesting to see the difference in cold & hot weather as well, although I realize this is work. Maybe once I set it up on my vehicle.
When there's uncertainty, I just use the following:
(chance of success)*(estimate of benefit) + (fun of trying)
vs
(cost & effort to try) + (chance of damage)*(estimated cost of damage)
In this case everything on the right hand side is very low. Since the chance of success is mixed, and some people are claiming a good sized benefit I think it's worth giving a shot.

the whole "not good enough" thing is easy to say when you have done nothing. if you don't agree with his results, do one yourself. disprove him the scientific way, not just by saying it's BS.

Mazda has announced its new lineup of direct-injection engines, called the DISI (direct injection spark ignition). The announcement of the performance enhancing, fuel conscious engines comes only weeks after Ford?s EcoBoost announcement.
The I-4 DISI engine seeks to achieve a 15-20 percent improvement in performance and a 20 percent increase in fuel economy over Mazda?s 2.0L engines.
According to the press release, the DISI engine will reduce energy loss and improve thermal efficiency with a variety of technological engineering. This includes cooling the air intake temperature and reshaping the combustion chamber.
Mazda also noted that they are looking to produce direct-injection diesel turbo engine technology that can improve the fuel economy and emissions by 10 percent as well.
Related to air filter performance is the temparature of the air being consumed by the engine. Warm air is thinner or less dense than cool air, and thinner air burns less efficiently. Therefore, it is desirable to keep the air inlet temperature to a minimum.
