Yeah, but didn't you see everyone looking at him? It may be lower that a motorcycle, but it demands much more attention from everyone around it
I ride my bike on the road - there's even less visible area
~17 per million cyclists die per year compared to about 140 per million car drivers (both in the US). BUT, about 1 in 20 people on bikes are injured per year (mind you that ~60% injuries are falls).
My digressing point is - visible size seems to be a common metric to compare with safety. Yet, pedestrians are very good at finding dollar bills (even quarters) despite the fact that, on average, a human is 93 times larger (by surface area)

Yeah really - but that picture in this thread with the two wheels in back... Even more likely to do that o.0 Making the thing a few inches wider and a few inches longer would fix that though -- he is a really tall person, so his higher cG wasn't helping
