That's exactly what I've been thinking of when reading about the Tata Nano...it seems very similar to what you'd get if you started producing the classic bug with some upgrades.

A reliable successor to the VW Beetle would sell like hotcakes, even if it's fugly. We learned to love the Bug and its Microbus cousin despite their shortcomings.

well they kept makin the "old bug" in brazil up until 2003
i would LOVE to have them remake the beetle into somehting that was as light and looked nearly identical (if they flat out remade the beetle that would be the best) to it im betting it would sell like hotcakes.
think about it, that generation is now getting towards /in retirement age, extra cash, wanting to relive thier youth, perfect car to do it in.

Wrong market...they won't tolerate a spartan car.

My sister-in-law and brother-in-law bought a brand-new Chevy Aveo for around $7,000 about 3 1/2 years ago. Someone had ordered it but didn't pick it up because of the color. The Aveo is twice the car the Nano is.

Yeah, i thought the price of the Tata nano was more like 2k, i guess they would want to add a few things so that an American would buy one, + shipping and tariffs.
Three lug nuts per wheel
a tail gate that does not open
one side mirror
they got a lot of pattens with this project. I heard most where for cheap ways of making gears for the trans. Time will tell how that works out, but a new trany will not break the bank as much an an "normal" car.
I heard they were coming out with an electric (may have happened by now) and it was going to cost less

If the $8,000 price tag holds true, it would cost far less than the $9,970 Hyundai Accent, currently the car with the lowest base sticker price in the U.S., according to the Edmunds.com automotive Web site. The price excludes shipping.
wow can i really only go 65mph for 8 grand?
buy a accent and put a wai on it
then again it would be like driving a ford econoline van, always a dangerous adventure..
id much rather buy a saturn sl1 5sp and put a wai on it which i could do for about 700$ and get around 45mpg and be able to go 100mph

I've driven quite a lot in 2 Econolines, they felt safe enough to me (one was brand new and was a pleasure to drive). Are you just referring to crash safety, or braking/handling?
