Swapping trans gear sets from a 02 civic D17 to D16

Hey guys my brother was an active member on here years ago when my car was his car. I have a 97 Civic HX MT. I Have recently built an engine for it and I am trying to acheive 60MPG and run a 11.99 qtr mile. I am doing so with alot of nitrous. The motor is built extra tough but has a basically stock top end to retain the MPG's. I also lightened it, it is down to 2050lbs from 2500lbs. I'll be doing an underbelly soon.

Anyways, my current question is: Is it possible to swap the whole gear set from a 02' D17 DX or LX trans into a 91-01 case? I want to use the D17 1-5 with the VX final drive in a VX case or HX if needed. This will yeild 96-01 HX 1-3 slightly longer 4th and a VX 5th. I could also swap the D17 case in and put the VX final drive into it. but, then I would need to fab mounts and install the D17 cable shifter assembly into my car.

Is it possible to swap D17 gear set into a D15/D16 case, and use the D15 VX final drive?

I'm willing to give it shot if nobody can prove "why not".

Thanks
