Cow, the airbox for my VR6 is much like the one in your GMC (and my wife's Chevy TrailBlazer) in that it draws cooler air from the fenderwell.
It does have a rear snorkel which essentially draws air from right next to the exhaust manifold. That snorkel has some sort of, for lack of a better description, a flapper valve closing it off. I could close off the cool inlet and jack open the "flapper" and have essentially two seperate intakes with one airbox.

I guess to them, I am the idiot.

also, I have a descent pic in my garage of my setup. you might also want some sort of temperature gauge for the intake. I use the scangauge but you are pre-obd2 so it won't work for you.
My recommendation for monitoring intake temps in a pre-OBDII vehicle is to buy a wireless outdoor thermometer. Drop the "outside" transmitter in the airbox, and keep the receiver in the car with you.

that is basically what I have done on mine. my airbox pulls from the fender and I have added the tubing that goes to the manifold. I cover the one I don't want with tape. I guess if I wanted to go back to factory, I could remove the tube and cover that entire hole with tape. all of this is pre-filter so it doesn't affect filtration either.

I think the flap is a warm up feature that helps the vehicle warm up faster. not sure on that one.

also on a side note: where is south mills???

Roughly 7 miles from the VA/NC state line on US-17. I live on the outskirts (if there were any) of South Mills. I'm about 6 miles south on US-17 from the VA/NC stateline, and about 1.5 miles off of 17. I tell everyone if they're coming from the south, to take the right turn 1/2 mile past the 271mile marker to get to my house. From the north, it's 1/2 mile past the 272 mile marker (math works, I suppose lol).

Yeah, it's about 20 minutes from Elizabeth City.

I have to be honest, I know next to nothing about NC. I'm in the Navy, and I just moved here back in February. I'm stationed in Norfolk, VA, but I'm living here because I got a lot of land and a decent sized house for a better price than anything I found in VA.

that's your long drive. from nc to norfolk. that makes sense.

if you get a long weekend or even just a day off. we used to go deep sea fishing leaving from elizabeth city. we'd go out for a half day fishing and it would run like $25 or so. that was a long time ago so prices have gone up, I'm sure. it was a good time though. also, check out the outer banks. some of the most beautiful beaches in the world (I am a little biased though)
