Smart ForTwo, Gas, H12, L1, L3 & L4 Difference

What is the difference between a Smart ForTwo Gas, H12, L1, L3 & L4 and how do I know which one I have? I assumed the L1 was the 1.0 Liter engine.
Is that correct?

This from the FAQ will answer the general meaning of the engine code: http://www.fuelly.com/faq/31/engine-type-codes

Generally the letter refers to the engine configuration (L for inline), and the number the number of cylinders, not the displacement. But it refer to a manufacturer code, or just be wrong. Like the H12, which would mean a 12 cylinder hybrid by the general code.

For the American fortwo, L3 is probably the correct one, but check other entries here.
