Reprogrammed ECU for my Jeep Diesel CRD...33mpg highway

A group from Dailmer/Chrysler with experience in diesels used the Jeep Liberty CRD to modify the ECU. Mine has been great for power and mileage. I have done three highway only tests of 120 each...64mph=31+mpg...61mph=33.22mpg...60mph=33.44 mpg (pretty consistent). These are Texas (lol) winter numbers with a partial grill block, 38psi tires, 2.25" lift with armor and a slightly taller 235/75/16 tires on a 4500# 4x4.

I didn't concentrate on any "hypermiling"...just used the Cruise Control. The Jeep travels 60mph @ 1715rpm.

City mileage is also up and driveability is vastly improved. I am pretty impressed with these numbers

Great numbers so far!

So what exactly can they tune with a diesel? Injection timing? Auto transmission shift points?

In theory, a diesel is always running as lean as possible, so what are the computer controlled variables that can be changed to increase efficiency?

Good question.. However keep in mind they were able to do the exact same thing when Top Gear America (now dissolved) did that 84mpg Diesel VW Rabbit that could do 0-60 in like 8 seconds or something..

Did they modify the NGC? I only ask because I was trying to reprogram the controller in 2005 as well and was told that no one was allowed to do this.

Funny, how the tune has changed.

Actually diesels run the gammit of fuel ratios...from 5:1 to 80:1 depending on fuel injected into the cylinder. They do not rely on the typical 12-14.7:1 stoichometric ratio of a gasser.

Increase Rail Pressure
Taylor Boost Pressure
Regulate EGR
Modify Timing
Retune pilot Injectors for less smoke
Change Throttle Response for a more linear feel
Changed Timing on Viscous Heater
Changed GlowPlug Cycle
Electric Fan is more protective of tranny
Even adjusted Fuel Guage for more accurate display

They made the Jeep CRD Drive MUCH BETTER and Improved MPG...less smoke...a bit less noise
