This goes against what you guys are saying but I do have some experience in this area.

A lead acid battery that is "bad" usually will not take a charge. What I mean by that is you can apply the proper charge voltage to the battery but little charge current will flow. This is what I have noticed from my bad batteries. If this is true, a bad battery will give better FE because the load on the alternator will be very little.
