Sounds like you had a very worthwhile trip.

Wow! That's amazing. What kind of terrain & speeds? Is this a round trip segment? You gotta post more details with numbers like that!

Damn, it sounds like Wayne needs to come to the west coast to give us some lessons. I go to his area every couple of years, maybe I can get a lesson too.

Sorry about the lack of details, it was kind of late. The terrain was relatively flat with some very moderate hills once in awhile. The trip was basically a big circle around the area that Wayne lives. The were some country roads and a stretch US(?)41 of about 5 or 6 miles. Speeds were very slow as far as averages go. There were a couple of times when I got down so slow that I couldn't bump start unless I would have went to 1st gear. I learned how to use my emergency flashers and ride the white line to encourage people to go around during the run. I think the max speed we ever got to was 50. We severely abused codfishing. Also, no rpms over 1500 in any gear. This was difficult in 1st since I was pretty much at 1500 as soon as the car started to move.

He was saying that relocation could be in his future. Maybe you'll get lucky. The only problem you may have is that a SG or equivalent is a mandatorey piece of equipment. We used it extensively to track our progress and make sure I was as light on the throttle as possible while cruising. I would say that with numbers like these it's hard to argue the worth of monitoring tools.

Staying below 1500rpm is hard. My 40mpg tank I used 2 gears that almost rev to 2000rpm(1st & 2nd). And I barely coasted with the engine off.
I still have to buy the other stuff. I want HX rims really bad, LRR tires, full underbody belly pan, and some other stuff. So no money for SG.
Thanks for the explanation, I know now what to do more while I save up for the mods. I hope a 45mpg tank mixed driving is in my future soon.

I hear you. Basically what you'll want to do is just get the car moving and as soon as it starts to roll, shift real fast, then shift real fast again. I didn't mention it before, but I actually used all 5 gears and my hand and left foot are pretty busy for the first few seconds after a start-up.

Yea I noticed if I want to shift below 1500rpm I have to use all 5 gears. At least I'll build up my left leg.

Save 400 bucks on the rims/tires, get a used SGI for 80-100 bucks, some flat wheel covers, and some coroplast, then buy an HX swap with the rest,
