I'm headed to Northern IL tomorrow to meet with Wayne(hypermiler extrordinaire) and go to the Milwaukee meet so I topped off tonight. I travelled 286.49 miles and used 5.900 gallons for 48.56 mpg. The SG 2 was only reporting 48. On the way home from the the station I took my new favorite route and tried for an all out FE run. The trip was 5.3 miles and and I averaged 28 mph with a max of 45 mph when I set up for my final codfish to my driveway. The SG was reporting 62.8 mpg by the time I got into my drive and got turned around for my codfish out in the morning. This was after a slight tweak of the SG so the mpg should be closer to actual now.

Well, some of those poor chickens didn't make it.
I filled up today and as feared, discovered I had mistakenly adjusted my SG1 in the wrong direction last time I filled up. (My fuel used volume had been under-reporting by roughly 3-4%, making me think I was getting slightly higher FE figures than actual. But I went the wrong direction with the correction factor.) So instead of being slightly optimistic on how much fuel I was using since the last fill-up, it was doubly optimistic!
So no 80+ tank for me, yet. I'll have to settle for 76.74 mpg (US).
I wonder if I would have tried harder, had I known it was "only" 76.74 ... yeah, probably... Well, it's still a personal best, by a hair or 2.

Today was an AWESOME day! My son and I drove to Wayne's house this morning then rode with him and Tom and Tony in Tony's Priapus up to the Milwaukee meet. Before we left though, I went to school. Wayne, my son and I went out in my Saturn and we anhialated the EPA rating for my car which is 33 MPG combined. With Wayne's coaching, I managed a 70.8 segment after 17.0 miles. This is 215% above EPA. This is a new personal best for me. Thanks Wayne. On the way up to Wayne's, the SG was reading 49.5 MPG and the return trip was 51.0 MPG . The distance to his house was a tick or so over 153 miles. The tank is at 49.8 MPG and the total for today was 49.7.
I think after seeing the different hybrids today, when I ever get one(soon I hope), I want an HCH . I open it up for discussion as to whether it should be a 1 or 2 in another thread. More of my commute is highway and an Insight just won't hold my family of 4. This is not to say at all that Tony doesn't have a nice car, he does. Thanks for a great day guys.

Sounds like you had a very worthwhile trip.

Wow! That's amazing. What kind of terrain & speeds? Is this a round trip segment? You gotta post more details with numbers like that!

Damn, it sounds like Wayne needs to come to the west coast to give us some lessons. I go to his area every couple of years, maybe I can get a lesson too.

Sorry about the lack of details, it was kind of late. The terrain was relatively flat with some very moderate hills once in awhile. The trip was basically a big circle around the area that Wayne lives. The were some country roads and a stretch US(?)41 of about 5 or 6 miles. Speeds were very slow as far as averages go. There were a couple of times when I got down so slow that I couldn't bump start unless I would have went to 1st gear. I learned how to use my emergency flashers and ride the white line to encourage people to go around during the run. I think the max speed we ever got to was 50. We severely abused codfishing. Also, no rpms over 1500 in any gear. This was difficult in 1st since I was pretty much at 1500 as soon as the car started to move.

He was saying that relocation could be in his future. Maybe you'll get lucky. The only problem you may have is that a SG or equivalent is a mandatorey piece of equipment. We used it extensively to track our progress and make sure I was as light on the throttle as possible while cruising. I would say that with numbers like these it's hard to argue the worth of monitoring tools.

Staying below 1500rpm is hard. My 40mpg tank I used 2 gears that almost rev to 2000rpm(1st & 2nd). And I barely coasted with the engine off.
I still have to buy the other stuff. I want HX rims really bad, LRR tires, full underbody belly pan, and some other stuff. So no money for SG.
Thanks for the explanation, I know now what to do more while I save up for the mods. I hope a 45mpg tank mixed driving is in my future soon.

I hear you. Basically what you'll want to do is just get the car moving and as soon as it starts to roll, shift real fast, then shift real fast again. I didn't mention it before, but I actually used all 5 gears and my hand and left foot are pretty busy for the first few seconds after a start-up.

Save 400 bucks on the rims/tires, get a used SGI for 80-100 bucks, some flat wheel covers, and some coroplast, then buy an HX swap with the rest,
