That's not limited to pro sport players. Anyone making income in another state is liable for that state's income tax (for that income). If they can't track it then they'll never know, but try doing construction on government jobs in CT when you live in RI and work for an RI company...that CT tax department is pretty nasty. At least RI is decent about it and credits you for the tax paid to CT so you don't pay twice for the same income.
Now I work in MA for a MA company and live in RI. I have to file in both states.
