How do I start the log for a new car when I want to track MPG by the odometer and not the trip meter? It had a full tank when I purchased it, and when I put my first fillup in, it came up with a zero reading. I then put it in my the trip meter and it worked, but I want to track by the odometer, and not the trip meter.

I have a new (to me) car and I just started from the first top-up, disregarding what was in the tank to start with. Over the piste, it is neither here nor there, and you don't know how full the tank really was when you took delivery. I am still waiting to do my second top-up to see what mpg I am getting.

A fuel up is not simply adding a tank of fuel, it's the fuel you used and the miles you just drove. I'd brim the tank just incase it's not brimmed, reset your trip odometer, and off you go. When you're ready to refill, that's your first fuel up. You can change the method in the vehicle profile if need be.

Thank you both, and I get it, but it was filled up when I purchased it with 40 miles on the odometer. Just wasn't sure how to start it off since I want to use the odometer instead of the trip meter.

The difference with using odometer is that the first fill you enter won't report any results. It is to set the start point of the odometer reading. On the second fill, the system can then calculate the miles traveled from the two odometer readings.

With any new car, you want to fill the tank full as it may not be completely filled and the gauge is vague. Then its enter the odometer value into Fuelly, or just reset a trip meter.

You see your average miles per tank is already screwed (if you have that set as a mini stat) because it divides both fuel ups by 2. So it looks like you're only getting about 200 miles per tank now.

Yep, which is the other reason for my questions. While I like the the app and website overall, starting out w/ a new car skews the numbers.

But not if you disregard what was in the car, to begin with, and start from YOUR first fill-up. Then at your second tankful, it calculates the difference between the two odometer readings and returns a true mpg figure.
