eh, well you know the story...
emissions, cost, making the car suitable for the general public.
Our cars have short 5th gear because the average Joe likes to mash the gas in 5th gear and expects decent acceleration. Lean burn was killed by tighter emission regulations.
For someone who has the ability to modify their car, there's nothing like tailoring it to your own needs.
