I'd love to get a hold of a first gen Insight, but they want a pretty penny for them.

Actually... i've found these insights to be pretty cheap... on craigslist i saw a few for 7 or 8k with 100k miles on them. I would get one if they had 4 seats instead of just 2.

Beware of cheap hybrids. With that kind of age & mileage they may be cheap because they need new batteries.

I don't think a $7,000 or $8,000 Insight with 100k miles is much of a bargain, when you can pick up something like a Hyundai Elantra or Chevy Cavalier of the same vintage with 50k miles for $3000. That $4,000-5,000 will buy enough gas to run the car another 50k miles, at which time the Insight engine needs a rebuild, and the Hyundai still has another 50k left in it.

This thread looks accurate to me. I get around the same for my '02 Corolla, a little better though mostly.

The Golf and Jetta TDI diesels were not available in the US in 1996. The non direct injected diesels didn't get the mileages indicated. Indeed the Golf TDI wasn't available until 2000(?).
For 1996 the Passat TDI would be the highest mpg diesel (37/45), for 1997 the lighter Jetta (no Golf) would be it. 1998 the Jetta (3rd gen "A") or New Beetle (4th gen "A"), different engines, too, would duke it out. 1999 saw the Jetta also (finally) switch to the 4th gen chassis.
