CAN-bus is an OBD2 standard protocol, just like VPW, PWM, and ISO. It's just a newer protocol than the other three. There's no accidentally being partially compatible with it...either the unit was designed to support CAN-bus or not.

As a point of interest, the 2008 Accent is CAN. Had to look at the pins to finally figure it out.

The kiwi says it supports:

OBDII/CAN Protocols ISO-9141, VPW, PWM, KWP 2000, 11Bit CAN, 29Bit CAN

Ahh, okay. Wasn't aware of that.

I just remember our old auto-tap from work not being compatible and giving us garbage info. But it says it supports it.

I really wanted it to work out as well. Bummed about it.

I bet we could make up our own thing here. We could use an Ardunio microcontroller that is so common in DIY. If they have an SMD version we could have pcbs printed and make it that small!

I like it.

Maybe I'll wait to see what the kit price is for the one The Holy Cow posted about. Parts total they gave as south of $60, but a kit with a PCB would be more.

I'd be fine with just a 10 segment LED bar graph, with setup done via USB interface from my computer, but I know my views are a bit extreme.

There is no reason that can't be done for under $60 with a printed PCB. Even prototype PCBs are fairly cheap to have made.

Well, it's $45 for their kit with no screen. Low volume stuff is funny on price. Maybe I'll just get the PCB from them and buy the components and program the chip myself.
