I have a scangage, and also the Auto Enginuity diagnostic connector and software that runs on my netbook.
http://www.autoenginuity.com/. The Autoengiuity system works very well , but using a laptop while driving is a pain and not altogether safe, even on the empty highways in Montana where I often drive 10 or more miles without seeing another car.
The Palmer Dashcommand unit is designed to run on smart phones, and also on the Ipad. I do have a first generation Ipad, and the touch interface makes this a lot easier to use then a laptop. This unit links wirelessly to the OBDII connector via 80211 wireless, and the transmitter is a separate unit.
