Gas taxes? I think it's a state by state thing, but I could be wrong.

Federal excise tax is 18.4

Federal excise tax is 18.4 cents. Some local politician is saying just to get rid of it and it'll solve all the problems. Where the money will get pulled from, I dunno. Everyone's big on balancing the budget but no one's big on understanding that taxes != theft.

about $6.50/gallon in the Netherlands
Yeah but again that goes for taxes to support national health roads etc where in this country it is supposed to goto road repairs but finds it way into other pockets. And it has not increased there like it has here recently - so think about that a little.

Yes but is the government subsidizing gasoline over there? I think the fault from the begining is the government cushioning prices through subsidies. And I'm sure that scandals occur over there just as they do over here with funneling tax dollars from one beneficiary to another.

With the boomers retiring, there is no way we can earn back that debt. If privitization of social security happens however, many people are going spend that money rather than save it for retirement. so either way, Americans will find a way to screw up. I don't see things getting much better.
The current 'privatization' scheme pushed by our politicians isn't any better. Simply handing it over to Wall Street for a few corporate types to mismanage is going to create even more problems.

Does anyone know where I can find the % of the cost of fuel per gallon that goes to taxes? I've heard that all states are 40-60%! That's nuts! The oil companies are only getting a profit of about 9%...it's the government that's raping us!
More like 10-15% goes to the government, varying by state.

I think you misunderstand the table. Those are in cents per gallon, not percent (unless, of course, there's a % sign). So at $2.50 you'd be at 16%, I think.

Today I passed a late-model F-250 doing 55 in a 70 zone. :O I normally do 65 to keep from being flattened (75-80 is the typical speed), though lately I've been able to go closer to 60.
