if your Fuel tank is really big I prefer you to fill up you tank when it is still above the empty point. so this way your problem is also solved and additional your fuel pump will last longer as it sits in the fuel tank and its only source of cooling down is the fuel. if there is less fuel contacting it then it will get much hotter and will wear down much faster.

With fuel prices as they are, I would have to fill up with half a tank due to the spend limit. Not my problem anymore anyway as I sold the car in question.

Fuel tank size: 101.............

1969 Corvette - IIRC - fuel tank held 20 gallons.

My present 1.4L EA211 VW Jetta tank is 14.5

Fuel exhaustion on the Corvette - Just once.

The Jetta? I really believe 700+ miles is not impossible

Two different cars. Two different eras. (i was sifferent too!)

My old Clio had a theoretical range of 962 miles per tank (about 10 UK gallons) with close to 100 MPG...I found that car "too good" on fuel, but now I kinda miss the economy.

Yes of course, a couple in the UK traveled several thousand miles around the UK and averaged about 120 MPG in an old Peugeot diesel a few years ago.

Maybe they drove most of their way downhill. Or they might never drove fast enough that the wind might get resistive

It was over 3700 miles, not sure if you've been to the UK, but it's impossible to cover that mileage without going up/down a few hundred hills. They actually achieved 126 MPG, although that's UK MPG. Full article here:

That's about 105mpg U.S.. Not too shabby! Interesting article. I'd like to see one of those driven all over the states and see what happens.

I remember reading about it, and it was very controversial at the time. From memory, they went to extreme circumstances like switching the engine off on long hill descents etc which is extremely foolish and dangerous. Nowadays, some cars do this automatically when coasting, VW group cars will coast for several miles downhill with the engine off.
