Here in hot Texas, I put my automatic trans into neutral at longer red lights, or train crossings. There's less load on the trans, which keeps it cooler, the engine has less load, idles a hair faster and circulates coolant through the engine better. Yes, I have electric fans on the car and it helps cool when stopped (compared to the old belt driven fans which often overheated cars in traffic jams.)
