6 passenger with best mileage?

Ok, here is our problem. We currently have three kids, 1.5,3 and 4.5 year olds. Right now we can all travel in the TDI and get 55-60 mpg. Once we have our next child (some time in December) we obviously won't fit in the wagon anymore. We do have a 2002 Toyota Sienna minivan but were getting right around 24 mpg overall in that one. It pains me to drive the van knowing the wagon could easily double the mileage. So does anyone have any better suggestions?

Any way to add another child seat to the back seat ?? It would just require another seat belt setup to strap in another child seat. You would think someone would invent a multi-child child seat!

Dodge Sprinter

You may not be able to get a new one (with the Diesel emission restrictions), but the Dodge Sprinter may be a good option. It comes with a 2.7L Turbo-Diesel that gets an estimated FE of 22/24, and seats 10. It's basically a Mercedes van with a Dodge emblem.

You may have seen the 1-ton version running around as FedEx delivery trucks. It's narrow and tall for good maneuverability in tight situations and parking.

No I can tell you this is no real option. If he is getting 3 seats in the VW it is already a very tight squeeze. A friend of mine purchased a 6 door cadilac funeral car to cart his kids around. Its an elegant solution compared to all the horrible vans we test drove. What about a diesel swap into one of the older GM wagons like a caprice or a roadmaster. I've been thinking about a cummins 4bt into a 2wd suburban. It should get into the mid 20s for mileage and you can burn bio diesel or straight veg oil. They have real 9 passenger seating so you could have 3 more kids before you need a 15 passenger van.

Your last option is have the VW stretched and add another row of seating.

Or a TDI swap into a vw eurovan. Or get really cheap and swap a tdi into a chrysler minivan.

No need for a 4BT, the 6.2l diesel in the suburbans already pulls mid twenties, i.e. 20mpg EPA combined. I've seen 'em go for a couple grand. But... once they start getting newer the price goes way up. Of course if someone can afford a tdi station wagon, one of these will be chump change. I think I'd second the Dodge Sprinter, 30mpg from the C&D staff in a 10 passenger van? That's pretty nice.

Just put the extra one in one of these and attach it to the tow ball..

..Great idea , but gets a little unstable above a hundred.
