That is a large problem with introducing fuel-efficient cars. The people who would buy the most extremely efficient cars are mostly the people who will not buy new cars (though some are environmentalists with money to spare). Unfortunately, manufacturers cannot build used cars.
The new car market is mostly full of people for whom fuel economy is not such a strong priority.

spot on HC. i believe if auto makers tightened their belts, they could produce more "affordable" vehicles. look at some of the choices now: one CAN get a new vehicle for ~$10k.

Looking at the article, I noticed that the interior shot was of a left-hand drive car...kinda odd for the UK...

they originally said it would come with a 1.4L turbo and boast the same numbers.
I hope it does come to the US but I can see it easily running over $15,000 with all the options.
if they did make one for around $12k, it might actually compete in the small car market.
I have high hopes for the spark as well (their new sub compact car coming in 2010)

Why do you think it will be brought here?

when I first read about it, they said it was going to be unveiled somewhere in europe (can't remember the actual country) and if things go well, it would come to the US in 2010-2011 but that was over a year ago.
they also claimed at that time that it would have the 1.4L turbo and get in the mid 40s for mileage.
I don't really think it will but more hope it will
