Old and Cheap

Hi!!
Been studying energy since about 1975 with good results.
While most of my work has been around the house with excellent results, I have been recently working with vehicles.
While my daily driver is good (35 city, 50 highway) I am looking for more in my next project.
Lightweight hybrid..electric for low speeds and diesel or bio for steady state cruising and charging.

While this is more purpose built for 100 miles per day driving of distances of 4 to 16 miles it will also serve some duty as a 40 mile per day commuter.

I am sure my vehicles may evolve as much as my house has.
Right now my biggest challenge is the city government and some uptight neighbors that think I am a menace to property values.

Bruce, you'll have to expand on the housing items in the Around the House forum. Welcome aboard.

My Mileage champ at the moment is a 1991 Ford Escort Pony.
2200 pounds..power nothing..synthetic oil in engine and tranny.
34-36 mph is during my part time as pizza delivery and I drive the stuff out of it. 50.2 mpg was with a passenger both ways and 600 pounds of oilfield fittings one way.
I also use it for oilfield hotshots as I am cheaper and on call 24/7.
Great car for $250 and $1150 in upkeep for 3 1/2 years.

Let me 2nd the Escort recommendation. I went from a 5.0 'Stang to an LT1 Caprice, to... a five-speed Escort Wagon, and it is far and away the best when it comes to transportation value. I regularly get mid-30s mpg, can break 40mpg on highway (keep speed down - it drops fast if you cruise at 85mpg, wonderfully mpg if you run 60, and nearly 40mpg at 70).

Get the five-speed, much better mpg and performance than auto.

Check ebay/craigslist for prices. happy shopping!
