Might be hard to get one though. And I don't think I would want to have one if I lived in hilly country because those only produce like 75 hp or so.

Freakin' sweet! I'd take one! I know a guy that lives in North GA (VERY hilly) and he drives an N600 - only 36 hp! I never had any problems with hills in my Beat with 64 hp. Well, that ice covered hill in Ohio took me a few tries to get up...

You could easily put an MPFI manifold on there and with a program like Uberdata tune the crap out of that thing like Coyote X.

Dax I guess you are right. I owned a Civic CX with only 70 hp and it wasn't bad in the hills even though I sometimes had to go back to third gear and drive 50 mph. Those are still thoughts from a mind that wasn't set for FE yet. 50 mph seemed pretty slow back then
Wonder what kind of mpg one could get with that 1.3 engine and how interchangeable parts are; for instance pairing it with a cx/vx tranny?

Engines are not hard to find here and cheap - $100 or so.

It was strange for me as well,but I gues honda did well in matching engine and gearbox ratio.
These are for my gearbox(same as D15B2 tranny by the way):
Type MT
Number S20
1st 3.250
2nd 1.900
3rd 1.250
4th 0.909
5th 0.750
Reverse 3.153
FD 4.250(4.437 from 1994)

Parts are not a problem,because this is essentially a D15B2 engine it's just
been destroked to 76mm almost a square engine (75borex76stroke)

This is a great swap,but a bit difficult to do.
D13B2 engine has a mechanical fuel pump that sits onto head,which does not provide nearly enough pressure to be used with EFI.
So in order to do the swap right you have to get a whole fuel tank with the pump
from an EFI honda plus the fuel lines to the engine bay.
The other way is to use an electrical pump with enough pressure.
Plus the wire hassle regarding the instalation of the new ECU.
But it is far from impossible,these are just specific things to be taken into account.

Does anyone know if these engines are obtainable in the USA? If I could score one for $100, I'd convert it to MPFI and throw it in my car with the HF tranny!

DaX, what kind of estimated mpg do you think one can expect of it. Would it be worth it in comparison with a VX engine?

McPatrick, I have no way to really give a good answer. If it were me doing it, I'd take the 1.3L engine, throw an MPFI intake manifold and distributor on it (with a stock ECU), and try mating it to my HF transmission. If I were having problems, FE issues, I'd try something like megasquirt to tune it.

One of my initial plans was to "sleeve down" my engine as small as possible. The problem I ran into was that none of the D-series sleeve manufacturers make their blanks small enough.

I truly think that in the right hands, a properly tuned 1.3L Civic engine mated to an HF transmission can get great mileage. In my hands, I'd hope to average in the 50's with some 60 MPG tanks. These are the results that I would hope for based on the numbers I'm getting now in my current setup.
