When I forget to record the odometer reading...

So every once in a while I forget to note the odometer reading when I fill up.

I would expect that Fuelly would just show a blank MPG calculation for that fill-up, and then at the NEXT fillup would take the last two fill-up volumes AND the last known odometer and calculate the MPG for the last two tanks.

But it doesn't seem to do that. Am I right? Do I need to do set something differently?

Thanks,

Gary

You should get a popup indicating an invalid fuelup entry if you fail to enter an odometer reading or trip record less than 1 mile.

Exactly, yes. And so what I do is throw a 'guesstimate' odometer number in there to make it work. Not a good system, methinks. I end up with inaccurate MPG calculations. Obviously what should happen is that I always remember to write down my odometer reading. But failing that, it seems to me it should allow you to skip and then calculate at the next fill-up by combining the missed fill-up and the next one. I guess you're saying it doesn't have that capacity. Sorry to hear that. It would be easy to program the calculations to have it do so. Thanks, G.

OK, I see what you're saying now.

There is kind of a "sideways" way to do that. Check the partial fuelup box for the entry with the guestimated odometer reading. The next complete fuelup will calculate the distance from the previous complete fuelup and add the fuel from the partial to the complete fuelup to calculate the combined MPG for the complete and "partial" fuelup(s).

Ok, I get it now. In my case it's not really a 'partial' fill-up, since I filled the tank, but I just didn't note the odometer. But I can force it to do what I want by checking the box (maybe it would be better labelled 'missed fillup or odometer not recorded.' I assume then that if I check the box, Fuelly won't demand that I enter an odometer reading. Anyway, glad to know that it will do the right math. Thanks..

You'll still need an odometer reading, but the accuracy of that isn't critical since it's not used in the calculation.

Good point. Got it. Thanks very much for the help. This is the only thing about Fuelly that has bugged me. And even so I just recommended it to a friend.

Great tip! Thanks. I was trying to calculate combined fuel price with an Excel sheet and adding them into one fill-up. This is a much easier way. Thanks!
