If the P&G rythm is thrown off by an approaching hill, if traffic permits, I'll just glide longer & slower on the approach to it. With luck, by the time I'm at the base of the hill, it'll be a 2nd gear start to the climb.
Better to climb the hill under load going through 2nd, 3rd & 4th (of course, as CO points out, this assumes you are sure there's a great glide opportunity on the other side).
