Does no one Hypermile anymore?

There doesn't seem to be any newish posts in the Hypermiling forum?

Is no one doing it seriously anymore?

I know I haven't taken it seriously for the last few years, but always enjoyed the discussions and learnt quite a few tricks from others on here.

The people who were obsessed with hypermiling moved on to electric cars. I'm constantly looking at used Lucid Airs or Teslas. The new Tesla Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive Long Range is a great deal even new. I installed a 240V charger in my house 4 years ago so that switching over to an electric vehicle would be very easy.

The new Model 3 long range gets 600kms with one charge and if you drive it normally, you can get 4.5 miles / kWh (150mpg or 1.5L/100km). I could charge that car in 8 hours with the charger that I have at home. What's not to like?

Thanks for your comments.

I'll be honest, I don't really bother hypermiling anymore. If I do, I do it for fun rather than any monetary saving as it really doesn't make any difference in the grand scheme of things unless you are doing huge mileage.

I still do, but right now with the "new" FEH, I'm more concerned with getting it running the way I want before I start trying to hypermile.

Yea I made the switch to electric in September, couldn't ignore the deals anymore. 430 bhp, awd, 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, 600 nm of torque, £4 for a full charge, 7 year 80k warranty all for £27k brand new. An ice car at that price has half the warranty and a pathetic 1 litre 3 cylinder engine for comparison.

Range is less important in evs because most people have the option to charge everyday either at home or work, and going beyond a battery range is pretty rare. Happy with my choice, stupidly quick car, and stupidly cheap to run too.

Draigflag and I are singing the same song. I still think that electric cars are a bit pricier still, but the benefits are great if you can charge at home and can afford one.

If you want to see a show where people hypermile electric cars going from Seattle to Boston, this is a highly recommended video that I watched a few times even though it's very long. 3,000 miles + 10 cars (one ICE car) + can go 10mph above speed limit and the car crossing the finish line first wins. 3 drivers in each car.

Thanks for the updates guys, good to hear.

I'm probably going EV or at least Hybrid in the next couple of years.

I struggle to justify the cost to change though as we currently have a couple of oldish cars, so the cost to change is quite substantial, I know the fuel savings would be quite good, but still struggle to justify the cost.

We can charge at home, but I know the missus can't deal with anything that might be hassle (finding a charger away from home for example). We are based in Ireland and the infrastructure isn't quite there yet for EV.

I'll take a look at that video later, thanks for the link.

Our 2013 VW JSW TDI 6M has gone - VW's emissions driven response to the US court system enabled me -via buyback- to recover my 2013 new car cost(s) - I gained 24 grand (but lost the California sales tax...................)

But I got an unbelievable deal on a brand new 2017 VW Jetta............and while i really don't hypermile much these days in west coast traffic - Fuelly dot com shows me at 40.5 mpg for circa 65,000 miles in 65% City use (with 0 issues...........)

This may be my last VW (I've had 8) as time (and Crown Royal) have deteriorated my driving skills.

New here bought a plug in hybrid. The Ford Escape there is no real new techniques. Electric cars can by hypermiled by taking the foot off the gas. The light acceleration. Unless I go fishing I don't use gas. Determining gas the place I went to was 45kms from home. The way back usually run out of range. With the heat on it was 5.4 liters with the heat off it was 3.7 liters per 100kms. Just by taking the foot off the gas by pulse and glide techniques. Tips I find is you use more range the faster you go. Cruise control uses less energy. Ideal speed seems to be 80kms per hour. I use neutral a bit then back to drive and use regenerative breaking to gain a little more range. I use the eco mode. So far in the warmer months have used .6 liters per 100kms Imperial miles per gallon 470.8 and when it hit -20's recently was 2 liter per 100kms 141.24 miles per gallon.
