I havent found that this is true, I have also hear many others say that it doesnt seem to matter if they ride like a grandma or if they ride the crap out of their bike. I basically get arround 42 regardless of how or where I ride.

I guess you're not riding hard enough... or not many hills in Kansas. I know not only fuel economy differes, tire consumption also.
