My first moped in MA was a single speed. Would slow down on hills. Tried to use it here in VT and it would just stop, so I got to walk it up hills. That got old really fast so I ditched it for a more modern one.

I traded my S-10 pickup in for a scooter (really a moped), a trailer, and a hitch for my wife's car.

My guess would be that 50cc would be the maximum size engine you could run without having to register it and have a motorcycle license. I know this for a fact in the state of NC.
