The tax on petrol and diesel are exactly the same, here in the UK. They are beginning to penalise diesels in other ways though, trying to drive them out basically. More stringent testing and charges for use in London, are but two.

Yep, as per usual, the idiots in charge of the country have scared people off buying newer cleaner cars. Instead of buying newer cleaner cars, they're sticking to thief old dirty ones, or buying petrol cars, which are often dirtier than the new diesels. Media backlash has a huge influence on those that don't know the facts. Since the VW scandal, C02 emissions have already risen, and the UK is in danger of not meeting its targets.
