in ontario we have an ownership document that needs to be signed over to the new owner when a car is bought/sold. it's extremely rare (and legally complicated) to ever buy or sell a car here without having that document. is "title" the US equivalent?
are missing or "un-clear" titles a common problem? since i often see US cars advertised with "clear" titles suggests there's some potential problem i'm not familiar with that's common enough to warrant the "clear" status in advertising.
THe title is the legal ownership document, which is registered with the state.
There are a few examples of "unclear" titles, one of which is a savage title. Stating that it is a clear title indicates that the car is not a savage title, and is able to be registered anywhere (with minor exceptions here and there, of course).
On occassion cars sell without titles. These are usually turned into track cars, or parts cars.
