I love being the pessimist, so I would like to be the first to say that if we have to wait until 2020 to get a 35mpg standard then the world will already be screwed. First off, there will not be enough oil to go around. Even at 35 mpg, no one will be able to afford to drive. Chances are everything will have already gone sour by then anyways though, so it probably won't end up making any difference in the long run.
That being said, I will be signing it. The realist, opptimist, pessimist, and all the other ists that compose me are just going to have to deal with it.
Oh, and I will continue getting FE at least in the 50s.

Better'n a kick in the head. 35mpg fleet average w/ no loopholes would mean a 45% reduction in automotive fuel use by ~2040. I'm not sure what the decline curve will look like, but this seems to square pretty well w/ a symmetrical decline curve starting in ~2010.

oh yah, based on my calcs it'll keep people paying about $3-6 (inflashun adjusted) for gas. ya can't build a fleet that's too efficient or else price falls through the floor.

I agree with erdrick too... Especially considering the FE for cars available outside of N. America. I'd probably be happy with 2015, but I can appreciate the act of making a decision as opposed to not making any decisions due to time disagreement...

Welp, according to stats, that explosion has been ~1%/year over the last few years, which I included. What's really interesting is that compared to the alternative, which is a few less mpg a few years later, the oil co's would loose out on billions.

When I clicked on the smiley my Firefox browser died. It said something about closing data execution to prevent harm to my computer.
Edit: It happened twice. Beware.
