How to keep tabs on gas prices?

Hey all,

In the past 2 months gas prices in my area have gone from $1.43 to $1.72. I'm trying to make myself aware of why fuel prices go up and down. I still have no idea why. Where should I look? Who dictates pricing? I mean oil is a business, right? So why are gas prices always in a mystical gray area?
