A rule of thumb I've heard is that if the annual premium is greater than 10% of the vehicle's book value, then you are generally better off without it.

I had progressive for 16+ years and after getting hit from behind in that parking lot accident . . . I don't call it an accident . . . They raised my primium twice in the same year so I switched to Geico and the price dropped by 1/3 for the same coverage. They did have a discount for miles driven per year and I am in the 8000 a year range so that may have helped a lot.

My Progressive rates were raised after getting rear-ended too.
