Arggg.... Hooray For Proprietary Fluids!

Just venting for a moment... Chaning my gear oil and getting ready for my country crossing....

500mL of VW gear oil.... $19.80 -- I need 5 of them (2.1 liter capacity). I tried getting something else... I can't find anything locally that's GL-4 rated. GL-5/4 or 5 is no good because of some of the component compatability Hooray for $100 in gear oil

But, if their gear oil is as good as their proprietary coolant... then perhaps it's worth it

Though you probably already know, if you're looking for a 75W-90 GL-4 your two best bets to find are Amsoil MTG or Redline MT-90 or MTL. Speed shops often carry Redline products, and that's where I found mine. MT-90 is "spec", while MTL is thinner, but many believe closer to the actual VW OEM fluid.

I was looking for the MT-90... And I can't find a place within range that carries it... If I had known that, I would have ordered it online (It's something like $8 a liter I think).

But, I just got back from a drive with the new fluid... And it's much smoother Nothing like fresh gear oil after so many miles
