Foam?

Asphalt is the default option in my area. I was drawn to anything but that. Slate would have been more than 100,000usd and it isn't maintenance free. I looked at metal shingles; they look nice enough but the bugs haven't all been worked out according to my local sources. Rubber shingles look great, but are extremely heavy and were still considered semi-experimental.

I never seriously considered cedar; it's expensive and high maintenance.

The only downside to standing seam metal seemed to be the cost. There is a winter issue with avalanches that can take out shrubbery.

I especially like this French design, which disappears into the ceiling:

Here are some Murphy Bed-like solutions with a modern, (I believe) Italian design twist:

The first option in the video immediately above is still what I'd call a Murphy bed and gives up nothing vertically when closed and only a few inches away from the wall. I'm not sure how you could do any better than that.

Oh? What if a cute cheerleader turned down the sheets for you?

DraigFlag/Paul, are cheerleaders strictly an American thing? Is there a European equivalent?

Oh. I also dislike convention kitchen cabinet doors, which, if left open, can be a safety hazard.

We are talking about flat panels that aren't on the heavy side, and need to be secured against wind storms.
