Consider where everyone lives before telling them that they overpay for cars. It's like telling someone in silicon valley they are overpaying for their house. Well, that's how much it is there. My gramma's farm in MO isn't worth 1k and acre but in tokyo an acre might be worth 1000k. Same goes for cars.
Here are some comparison examples :

Attachment 596

Attachment 597

In this case, a $500 premium. In the above examples, I chose private seller, 200K miles, and good condition.

Since we're in rice-rocketeer territory in LA, that probably has a big effect.

I don't think KBB really does a good job when you get down low in the price range...Atomicradish said a running crx sold for 3-400 in another thread, but up here in 2-3 years the only crx I've seen sold for that price had a blown engine and was missing body panels.

It's prolly just my frustration at being unable to find a deal around here...

Yeah. I use these things as a relative barometer, though. The comparison does express a relative price difference based on the region. You start with KBB, then you get the Recycler and look at prices, you look in the want ads, you look in craigslist and Ebay.

Doin' the homework before spending the bucks,
