The UK’s AutoExpress reports that Toyota’s fuel economy target for the upcoming next-generation Prius is 40 kilometers/liter (2.5 l/100km, or 94 mpg US), and that the automaker is striving to have the new Prius on the road as early as 2008.

They said sometime ago they were going to make the Prius more economical, faster and cheaper.

Those sluggard American car companies better get their act together. I don't fit in a Prius or a Civic, or most cars because the seats are too low. But there is simply no technical reason that GM or Ford couldn't mass-produce a full size diesel pickup that gets 30 MPG. There is no reason they couldn't build a 40 MPG diesel-hybrid pickup too.

GM lost $11B last year. Their 22 MPG SUV "breakthrough" is not going to save them in the face of $3.00 gas.They're going to go completely bankrupt unless they improve fuel economy faster than the new CAFE standards.

I think I just saw a TV ad where they were boasting that 22mpg... I just thought to myself, "Wow... they are advertising that as GOOD???" I've driven plenty of my friends Tahoe's and Durangos and Denali's and crap... I guess its nice being able to fit 2 people in the huge *** drivers seat (joking) and see over everything (I hate driving behind bigger cars in my CRX... I can't see around anything)... but watching them pump $80, $90, $100+ into the tank at a time... ummm no thanks. Not to mention they handle like crap... but I guess you can't expect 5000lbs of steel to change direction too quickly.

unfortuneately i still dont think 90 mpg would break me over the worth it point...
the cost of a new car...and you can bet your *** this one too...
is well over my expenditures in fuel in a car that gets better than 40mpg

though it might be worth the cost just to stop burning that much fuel
i think its great...but reality is an evil government that acts like a one sided coin...it just doesn't spend the same...

even though i applaud those that purchase the prius/insight (plus $10g econocar)
i still look at them with hand over fist...
probably because i cant understand why we dont all get one...and a choice of what body to put the engine in...
like a gift...
i mean...all those in the government are well taken care of...
they will never have to buy anything...in their life...
and they are all supposed to be there to help us...as in...putting their time in to help the progress of a nation...
now its all a setup...there is no sense of progress...
all moves are for personal gain...
and all mine are against theirs

i want to change them from just being able to think they can walk off with all of our lives below them...
a life of their pride in a nation that doesn't exist except for those that agree with their benevolent attitude that "we aren't all the same"...

eigerzoom you make excellent points. It will take so long to break even on a new car, especially when you consider higher insurance rates as well.

I remember reading a while ago that it would take over 300,000 miles to break even if you purchased a honda civic hybrid instead of the civic LX model.

Most people don't keep their cars for that long.

When it comes down to it, the decision to drive a hybrid HAS to be able doing what's responsible and not about what will save money.

I might get one used in 2014 when they are cheap
