It seems they are affected. I can't say civil words like P***at, G***avers, or ***ume. Maybe common substrings like that one should rule out legitimate words first. Failing that, then maybe insert '*'s. Just curious.

keep in mind, there is a big difference between 1337 5p33k and 'AOL'ese

one is intended to be a weak form of encryption and the other is out of sheer laziness.

I believe so, if you're going to go by pronunciation and all that. In japanese shi and i are two letters so it makes sense because shi-ta-ke would sound kinda flat. Plus from my understanding shii is commonly used.

You're probably correct, though Merriam-Webster's says it's a variant: http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/shitake.
